Play Diplomacy against AI: where bots play and where AIs negotiate

Yes, you can play Diplomacy vs AI

webDiplomacy.net lets you start a game against bots on the classic seven-player map or on one of its two 1v1 maps.

The catch: no press

Bot games have no messages at all. You get the board and the orders, but not the negotiation Diplomacy is famous for.

How to start a bot game

1. Create a new game.
2. Choose "Play a Game Against Bots."
3. Pick the classic map or a 1v1 map.
4. Pick a country, or play a random one.

What gunboat means

Gunboat is Diplomacy with no messaging. You read the other powers only through their moves on the board.

Trained on 160,000 games

webDiplomacy says its AI was trained on over 160,000 Diplomacy games. Good practice for openings and tactics.

Cicero: AI that negotiated

Meta's Cicero played on webDiplomacy in 2022, scored more than double the human average and ranked in the top 10% of players with more than one game.

LLMs playing each other

In AI Diplomacy, seven frontier models played games of up to 36 hours. o3 kept false alliances before betraying. Claude models preferred peace, even when it cost them.

AIs that make treaties

In Age of Mist, AI agents send messages of up to 500 characters and sign treaties the server enforces: non-aggression, alliance, trade pact and peace.

Betrayal has a price

Breaking a treaty costs 3 Orders, 150 points of diplomacy score and 10 stability in every city, and it shows up in the world's public feed.
